The prom isn’t only a major rite of passage for teens, it has also become a financial burden for families, with the average expenditure slated to reach $1,139 this year.
That’s a 5% bump from last year, according to a survey from Visa (V -0.91%). That means prom spending is rising faster than the rate of inflation, which has hovered below 2% this year.
Another trend emerged in Visa’s survey: It found that poorer parents plan to spend more than wealthier ones. Families earning less than $50,000 a year will spend $1,245, while those earning more will fork over only $1,129.
The biggest spenders of all are single parents, who said they’ll shell out $1,563 to outfit their children in tuxes and prom dresses, hire limos and buy other accoutrements. Meanwhile, married parents are relatively frugal, budgeting just $770, the survey found.
So is the culprit the rising cost of…

In 2010, women made up almost half of the labor force (46.7%). In 1997, women made up 46.2% of the labor force, and back in 1970 women made up only 38.1% of the labor force.
There was some speculation that women’s share of employment could surpass men’s during the 2007-2009 Great Recession—often referred to as the “Mancession” because of disproportionate job losses in male-dominated fields such as construction and manufacturing. However, women have fared worse than men in the recovery that began in mid-2009.
Women in today’s workforce who do marry and have children are not necessarily leaving their careers to do so. Today’s woman often balances her career with her husband and children. Fully…

When was the last time I told you how annoyed I get with Black people?
Jay-Zreleased a musical press release titled “Open Letter” answering all haters and critics that had something to say about his trip to Cuba, the selling of his portion of the Brooklyn Nets and anyone that had something to say about his movements.
Radio stations across the nation and Black Twitter were in their feelings about the Timbaland-Swizz Beatz produced record. Some hailed it as one of Hov’s best, others weren’t impressed. But for hip hop’s elitist, a lot of people used the song to scribe a Twitter manifesto of sorts, outlining their disappointment with Jay for not using his celebrity to teach and empower the community, give back and be a role model for children.
I thought it…

On its 90th anniversary Sunday, the First Presbyterian Church in Texas celebrated a birthday and a farewell. The services were held for 50 years in the light russet brick building with the dark wood pews and red cushions at 208 E. Central Ave. This church is the successor to wooden buildings the congregation occupied for the previous 40 years.
This past Sunday it said goodbye.
“We’re down to five to six people including the preacher and the organist,” Pastor Lois-Elaine Lindberg said. “I don’t like it. It’s a nice little church. It’s a shame young people are not interested anymore in going to church unless they have wild hip-hop music.”
Church Elder Elsie Baus, a member of the congregation since 1997, said one of the old wood buildings was demolished in 1998 because it had been vandalized.

Hezekiah Walker Returns With 14th Album
Apr 29, 2013 By Oretha Winston, Lead Editor
Hezekiah Walker has experienced some major developments since the release of his last album nearly 5 years ago. For one, he became Bishop of the Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ Fellowship, providing leadership to more than 30 churches around the country in addition to the Kunjalo Diocese in Cape Town, South Africa that he oversees – all while remaining Senior Pastor of his thriving Love Fellowship Tabernacle in Brooklyn, New York and Bensalem, Pennsylvania.
Walker has become a mainstay on New York radio where he hosts a popular mid-day show for WLIB and a Sunday morning show for WBLS. Most recently, he created the Azusa Next Generation conference that brings together the nation’s most prominent pastors, speakers and worship leaders, ultimately revitalizing a defining moment in the Christian faith.
The next conference will be held May 19 at the Jacob Javitz Center in New York.
Hezekiah is very excited! He says:
“The project is about unity, and I feel really good about it, his is the first time in the history of my career that I’ve done collaborations with so many artists. This is monumental for me. That’s what it’s all about in this season, us coming together and letting the world know that it is possible for us to stand together as one.”
With each of these developments, Walker is motivated by his commitment to Kingdom relevancy. “One must continue to evolve so that the Kingdom can stay fresh, exciting and most of all relevant,” says Walker. He pours this passion for Kingdom relevancy into his upcoming CD AZUSA THE NEXT GENERATION, being released June 11 on RCA Inspiration.

What’s In Your Bag?
Just a little fun tidbit where we ask people to tell us a bit more about their everyday gadgets by opening their bags and hearts to us. Show us your bag in this forum post. My bag may be a little out of sync most of you won’t find it particularly interesting because it’s not tech focused, but neither is my job. I spend most days updating calendars, scheduling interviews, video shoots, obtaining talent releases, and planning events…etc. My bag may be a little small, but it’s able to carry everything I need with a little flair. depnding on what they day brings I will usually switch up my bags. So check out my life…share what’s in your bag!
While I tend to sport a messenger bag or tote that can accommodate my computer (MacBook Air) but because it’s not as small as it looks, it can hold my computer if needed. It certainly isn’t the ideal work bag, but hey, it’s cute, so I deal with it.
Oh, and I have friends yes I do…some of my friends jumped on the idea and here’s what they have in their bag!!!!
