What to Wear When: You’re On A Corporate Interview

As a follow up to my creative agency interview post, we need to discuss what to wear on a more conservative interview. These can be a bit tricky. The worst thing you can do on your first corporate interview (besides chew gum or let your *Nsync ringtone play full blast) is try to ignore your personality or appear drab when you present yourself. While you may want to be more polished and less modish, that doesn’t mean you need to hold back who you are. Here are a few of my favorite pieces for the more conservative meeting, along with tips to remember when dressing: corporate I rarely wear slacks, so you’ll never see me put them on for an interview. Most important to me is to have great classic items that can mix together in any which way. A dress, whether it’s solid or patterned, is a must-have. Cannot go wrong with a wrap dress. I prefer darker colors here as they are universally flattering. A pencil skirt is another great option. Rather than a two-piece skirt suit (who wears those?) I would pair a patterned skirt with a solid blazer (like this one too) and a blouse or shirt.

As for accessories, you can have one playful item that adds a little something to the outfit – whether that’s a chunky necklace or a collection of bangles and bracelets. Avoid neon colors. Shoes should be a solid pump, no toes showing (check the tips and make sure these are clean!). I like a classic black bag too. No matter your outfit, a trench coat is the perfect topper for the professional outfit. I like this one.

As these are very basic, clean-cut clothes, fit is incredibly important. Do not wear pants that are not hemmed, skirts that tug or hang loose, or dresses that do nothing for you. The key here is figure flattering, not “what is the most professional thing my mother purchased for me last Christmas” (only saying that because I’ve been there). If you don’t have any items in your closet that do not fit you and you need to make a purchase, I would recommend buying one great professional dress and a perfect-fitting pencil skirt. You can mix the skirts with any tops you wish, and the dress is a great item to wear to all of your first interviews.

black girls workout 2 Black Girls Workout Too 21 Day Snatch It Back Challenge

I used to be one of those people who would make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and I would go hard for about the first three months or so only to fall off before summer and not finish out my fitness goals. Since then, I have learned that resolutions just aren’t for me and that I need to focus on making life changes instead.

A couple years ago, I decided I wanted to lose weight so I started working out and trying to incorporate exercise into my daily routine. Of course, there have been plenty of times I fell off and started over, etc, but I have since learned that the key is not to quit.

Last year, I learned about the Black Girls Workout Too DVD and saw there were thousands of women who were testifying that they were losing a large amount of weight in a short period of time so I decided to try it, and loved it.

When Ellen and Lana Ector announced they were launching the second version of their DVD, I jumped on it as soon as it went live on late last year. Now they have come up with a 21 day “Snatch It Back” challenged which started this past Monday and I got on board. Believe it or not, I’m only a few days in and have already dropped 6 lbs.

Studies have shown that if you do something for 21 days that it will become a habit. I learned this some time last year while taking a 21 day meditation course by Dr. Deepak Chopra on Abundance, and by taking Oprah’s life class. Doing that 21 day meditation challenge really changed my life and made such a huge impact, I was ready to jump on this “Snatch It Back” challenge because I want to make exercise and good eating habits apart of my everyday life. Not only to lose weight, but to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle as well.

At the beginning of the year, I decided that I would do a personal 90 day challenge for myself and am now incorporating this 21 day challenge as well into my 90 days as many times as possible, which is around 4 times. I can’t wait to see my results. I’m so looking forward to discovering the old, new me.

Check out the rules of the 21 day challenge below:

Have you heard of the Ice Bucket Challenge?

Have You Heard about the “Ice Bucket Challenge?”

Viral Movement Dares People to Spread ALS Awareness

11-year old Jack Soucy, with his father, Art, participates in the “Ice Bucket Challenge” to raise ALS Awareness.

It may be warm in parts of the country, but some people aren’t drenching themselves in ice or cold water to cool down from elevated temperatures. A new phenomenon has hit the social media circuit – the “Ice Bucket Challenge.”

The challenge involves people getting doused with buckets of ice water on video, posting that video to social media, then nominating others to do the same, all in an effort to raise ALS awareness. Those who refuse to take the challenge are asked to make a donation to the ALS charity of their choice.

Beverly, Mass., resident Pete Frates, along with his family, helped to make the “Ice Bucket Challenge” go viral on the social sites Facebook and Twitter.  Frates, 29, has lived with ALS since 2012, and he has worked with The ALS Association’s Massachusetts Chapter.  A former Division 1 college athlete with Boston College Baseball, Frates tirelessly spreads awareness of Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

What is ALS?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.

Ice Bucket Challenge

As motor neurons degenerate, they can no longer send impulses to the muscle fibers that normally result in muscle movement. Early symptoms of ALS often include increasing muscle weakness, especially involving the arms and legs, speech, swallowing or breathing. When muscles no longer receive the messages from the motor neurons that they require to function, the muscles begin to atrophy (become smaller). Limbs begin to look “thinner” as muscle tissue atrophies.

This viral sensation, which has used the hash tag #IceBucketChallenge, has attracted thousands of followers, including Boston Bruins stars Brad Marchand and Torey Krug, who willingly dropped frozen ice on themselves and issued the challenge to others.

“This is a creative way to spread ALS awareness via social media and in communities nationwide,” said Barbara Newhouse, President and CEO of The ALS Association.  “We thank Pete Frates and his family for getting so many people involved in spreading the word about ALS.”

Other examples of the challenge can be viewed on the Team FrateTrain Facebook page.
