United Way of Central Indiana is seeking nominations by August 10 to honor volunteers whose contributions to nonprofits in Central Indiana over the past year have advanced United Way’s community impact work in education, income, health, basic needs and diversity.

Honorees will be recognized Friday, September 18, at a reception in the Hilbert Circle Theatre Wood Room overlooking Monument Circle. Following the reception, they will be recognized as part of United Way’s BIG Kickoff with the Indianapolis Colts.
We look forward to celebrating some wonderful volunteers who are helping change lives and communities for the long-haul in Central Indiana.

It has been almost one year since the murder of Michael Brown, Jr. and the uprising that followed. Our movement has grown immensely and here in Ferguson and St. Louis, we continue to fight for all those who have been lost. From August 7-10th, we will stand together, united in purpose, as we uphold our commitment to this movement for Black Lives.
Over the last year, our movement has made it clear that Ferguson is Everywhere. That’s why we’re using the hashtag #UnitedWeFight — because we lift up and demand justice not just for Michael Brown, Jr., but for Sandra Bland, for Kayla Moore, for Yvette Smith, for Kajieme Powell, for Dontre Hamilton, for Taneisha Anderson, for Vonderrit Myers and for far too many more.
We invite you to join us in St. Louis for the Anniversary Weekend. We have a huge variety of events planned including mass meetings, rallies, concerts and protests. If you can’t join us, we ask that you plan solidarity actions in your own communities. We ask that groups honor Michael Brown Jr by participating in a four and a half minute National Moment of Silence on Sunday, August 9th at 11:55AM CST. We also ask groups to join us in a day of mass civil disobedience by planning Moral Monday actions for August 10th. Investigations and reports are not enough. Six Habits Of Ambitious People
Ambition isn’t a dirty word. Channeled correctly, it’s the motivator to a satisfying life.
Ambition gets a bad rap. The trait that pushes someone toward success can sometimes turn into a game where winning isn’t about achieving; it’s about beating the other person. Channel it correctly, however, and ambition can bring great results.
“On average, ambitious people attain higher levels of education and income, build more prestigious careers, and report higher overall levels of life satisfaction,” says Neel Burton, psychiatrist and author of Heaven and Hell: The Psychology of the Emotions. “Many of man’s greatest achievements are the products, or accidents, of their ambition.”
The key is to pursue healthy ambition: “People with a high degree of healthy ambition are those with the insight and strength to control the blind forces of ambition, shaping [it] so that it matches their interests and ideals,” says Burton. “They harness it so that it fires them without also burning them or those around them.”
Nearly anyone can be ambitious given the right internal and external stimuli, says Jason Ma, author of Young Leaders 3.0: Stories, Insights, and Tips for Next-Generation Achievers. Here are six things you can do to harness your ambition and focus on success over competition:
Ambitious people are goal-oriented and are always striving towards the next accomplishment, but healthy ambition involves keeping your goals private, said entrepreneur Derek Sivers in a 2010 TED Talk “Keep Your Goals To Yourself.”
Psychologists have found that telling someone your goal makes it less likely to happen, Siver explained: “Any time you have a goal, there are some steps that need to be done, some work that needs to be done in order to achieve it. Ideally you would not be satisfied until you’d actually done the work. But when you tell someone your goal and they acknowledge it, psychologists have found that it’s called a ‘social reality.’ The mind is kind of tricked into feeling that it’s already done. And then because you’ve felt that satisfaction, you’re less motivated to do the actual hard work necessary,” Siver said.
Ambition takes a willingness to step into fear and anxiety, says Burton. “Some people are better able to tolerate this fear, perhaps because are more courageous, committed, or driven, and can minimize the fear,” he says. “Ambitious people act with purpose, but allow themselves room to explore, experiment and discover.”
“Don’t be surprised if a breakthrough emerges from a well-managed crisis,” adds Ma, who is also CEO of ThreeEQ, a firm that mentors high-achieving teenagers and adults. “Ambition is the act of being an innovative change-maker.”
Ambitious people break away from consistent groupthink, and expose themselves to new ways of thinking.
“Talk with and learn from people different from you,” suggests Ma. “Be open to dialogue with acquaintances and even select strangers, as you may uncover interesting opportunities.”
Burton says ambition makes people resourceful: “It forces us to grow, often in unexpected ways,” he says.
Often people spend the most time working on building their skill set and researching solutions or possibilities. While it’s wise to craft and execute a strategy for any given type of important vision or outcome you want to achieve, ambitious people put the main emphasis on pulling the trigger.
“An executer is one who gets shit done,” says Ma. “If your execution is poor, nothing matters.”
Your biggest competitor should be yourself, says Ma. “Avoid the trap of comparing yourself with others, and measure success only against what you are capable of achieving,” he says. “Nothing beats hard work with focus and passion. Stretch yourself.”
Finally, Ma suggests applying the “power of proximity” by networking with clusters of successful people.
“[The late entrepreneur and author] Jim Rohn said: ‘You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,’” says Ma. “Find role models. Befriend and learn from mentors. Make friends with people smarter than you and more successful in fields you are interested in.”
The Red Line and Transit Oriented Development
Boards on Display for Public Review July 2, 2015 through August 19, 2015
Hello Everyone! It’s been a while since we sent out a newsletter, but we have exciting things coming this summer and fall, particularly around the Red Line!
Many of you will recall our three rounds of public engagement around the Red Line in 2013, culminating in the adoption of the Red Line Alternative Analysis. In 2014, we received a $2 million U.S. Department of Transportation TIGER Grant to complete environmental analysis on the entire Red Line corridor through Westfield, Carmel, Indianapolis, and Greenwood, and to complete final design for the first phase of the Red Line between Broad Ripple and the University of Indianapolis. We’re up and running on those tasks, and we will be asking for your feedback in July and August on Red Line station locations, station design, and how to prioritize sidewalk and trail improvements to help connect you to your station. Watch for specific dates and meeting locations in the coming weeks!
Your input will help firm up our Red Line cost estimates, which we’ll need to submit a detailed funding application to the Federal Transit Administration this September. In coordination with that effort, the City of Indianapolis is planning to update the Comprehensive Plan in late August 2015 to incorporate the policies and recommendations for the Red Line within the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Strategic Plan. We’ve created a few boards and posted them at libraries and other public locations along the Red Line corridor in Indianapolis. We encourage you to check them out, but we’ve combined them into this handy infographic if you’d like to view the boards online.
Feel free to contact us if you live or work on the Red Line and would like us to come and update your neighborhood, church group, professional colleagues, or any other organization that you work with, and watch for announcements in the near future about upcoming public meetings and chances to participate in the Red Line planning and design process.

I woke up one morning as a normal day, to view my emails and go about my day as normal. Midday I was getting these headaches, (normally get headaches so I thought nothing of it…maybe I skipped breakfast I move so fast some days I can hardly tell. I continue to go about my day and started to feel better, at the end end of the day, I lay down and felt something wasn’t right …God said listen to your body.
I go to the local drug store to get aspirin since I couldn’t take the headache any longer (I am not a pill taker).
