PBS Presents Songs of The Summer..A Historical Mixtape

In 1958, Billboard launched its Hot 100. Almost sixty years on, how we listen to music and how we track a song’s success may have changed, but music remains a powerful force in our culture.

Every Friday this summer, American Experience will reveal a new addition to their historical mixtape. Listen and read along.  And take a peek at this week’s line-up from 1963. Do you recognize a few names?

“Things I’m Lovin Lately” May

“Things I’m Lovin Lately”….

Things I’m Lovin Lately (Summer Turned Fall Edition)….

I never really take into account all the amazing aspects of summer… until it’s literally over. Summer is hands down the best time of the year. No stress, no tears over school, and absolutely no worries. And as the end of summer officially hit me harder than I even expected, I looked back on all of my amazing memories and everything that I am truly going to miss about summer. However it doesn’t have to unless I want it to it’s all in your head. As you all know I’m not big on Fall/Winter season I only enjoy it because it my kids & I birthdays. As I tend to get the blues, but as I get older I’m learning to embrace every season as it comes my way for new opportunites. So are a few “Things I’m Lovin”  In the Summer way into the Fall/Winter &  beyond no matter what season.

~ Embracing technology and learning how to weave it into my life in a positive way.

~  Making lists.

~  Bubble baths with salt and essential oils.
~ Spa days. Massages, steam rooms, saunas, facials, fluffy robes.

~ .Getting together with a big group of girlfriends and talking about life, rather than work.

~ Sitting down to a delicious looking dinner that I made myself.

~ Farmer’s Markets.
~ Fruit. Fruit salads, whole fruit and fruit smoothies. My fruit monster status.

Chocolate. Hot cocoa

~ Wearing my hair in a high bun all day. Aka, fuss free hair. Also: no makeup days.

~ The sound of crickets humming. The sight of fireflies. Warm summer nights and after dinner strolls.

~ Early morning breeze and summer sunrise

~ Skirts that twirl or flow, and shoes that sparkle.

~ Singing loudly in my car and thinking I sound amazing. example: Let it Go, Elsa has nothing on me.

So, there are my Things I’ve been loving lately for the last few months. I love doing these kinds of posts, so I’d love to know what you’ve been enjoying over the Summer too.

I’ll leave you with some links/info from around the web!

Motivational Monday 10/10

Habits happen naturally after they’re formed—they become a ritual, something you can slip into automatically, something you don’t even have to think about. For example, if you have to update an editorial calendar every day, make it an unconscious habit, sparing you the necessity of remembering it in a desperate scramble. Forming habits is the hard part—a good rule of thumb is to force yourself to commit the action every day, with no breaks from the routine, until it comes naturally (some people say it takes 30 days, but the evidence is iffy and subjective).

Summer Festival Recaps…

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is an annual music and arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, located in the Inland Empire’s Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert. Check out our report and photos from last year’s Coachella. Coachella’s official name is ‘The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival’ as it comprises of both some of the world’s most famous artists and bands, as well as some pretty amazing art installations. Held across two weekends every April, the music fest is played out across five main stages; the Coachella Stage, Outdoor Theatre, Gobi Tent, Mojave Tent and the Sahara Tent.

#Essence Festival

Essence Music Festival, known as “the party with a purpose”, is an annual music festival which started in 1994 as a one-time event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Essence, a magazine aimed primarily towards African-American women. Held each year in New Orleans, Essence Fest celebrates the talents of the local and national African American community. During its 25-year tenure, Essence Fest has grown from a music festival to include speakers, authors and comedians, creating a more expansive creative experience. Featuring a main stage in the Louisiana Superdome, the festival also offers ongoing talks, workshops and performances in areas throughout the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Guests can enjoy non-stop music entertainment, attend motivational seminars or witness quirky comedic performances in the largest cultural event of its kind in the country.

NYC Popfest is a 4 day indiepop music festival in New York City! The 2016 festival will run from May 19-22. n 1996, what started out as a house show with friends bringing together bands that were influenced by music from Factory Records, Sarah Records, Labrador Records and the C86 era turned into one of the most popular indie pop events worldwide. Ten years after that house show, those friends reconvened with new friends bringing together some of the best jangling, fuzzy, twee and indie pop bands across four days in New York.

In 2007, the first official NYC Popfest event was established. Together the pop lovers brought in bands not only from the United States but from all over the world. Classic artists such as Pipas, Ballboy and Allen Clapp graced audiences with their nostalgic pop songs. Pelle Carlberg (former Edson ring leader) proved that Swedish Pop can never do wrong. Buzzing new artists such as Human Television, The Secret History and My Teenage Stride added a sense of continuity in the pop world. The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, what was once an obscure indie pop fuzz crowd pleaser, is now one of the most well known bands to be projected into the indie rock world. The following year also delivered a mixture of old and new as well. Buzz bands Love Is All rocked a packed Cake Shop. Cats On Fire flamboyantly charmed audiences.

#Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration

Indiana Black Expo’s 46th annual Summer Celebration is July 7 -17. Celebrate with fun concerts, events and educational opportunities throughout Downtown Indy.

IBE holds its 46th annual fundraising cultural event from July 7-17. Twenty events over 10 days. There are opportunities to shop local businesses, take in a fashion show, have breakfast with the mayor, try out Microsoft’s latest gadgets and even see some of your favorite Pacers players.

This year’s Black Expo will offer several new exhibits including a Tech Zone, where you can get your game on, a conference where you can learn how to make it in the music industry and a teen forum on social media and politcs.

Another new addition this year is the IBE Pavilion, which will showcase the history and current activities of the Indiana Black Expo community.

“One of the things we need to do more of is to tell our own stories,” IBE communications manager Dian Foreman said. “We want people to be able to see that, yes, this is a fundraiser, but look at all of the things we’re doing all year round.”

Summer Celebration events will educate your mind, nourish your soul and get your body moving. Here’s a quick look at some of the events. For a complete list, visit
