Life. Hunger steals quality of life. For some it steals life itself. Small children are especially vulnerable, and each day more than 8,000 perish due to hunger related causes.

Changing. Fueled by like-minded community members, we provide meals that have the power to transform lives. Regular access to nutritious food does more than satisfy in the short term. It builds the foundation for a hopeful future.

Nutrition. Superior nutrition in each serving is vital. Our meals carry a powerful vitamin/mineral combination. This newly developed formula is scientifically proven to improve key health factors of the chronically hungry.

Pack Away Hunger is a non-profit organization dedicated to greatly improving the lives of children and others who suffer from hunger and malnutrition. The lack of proper nutrition creates serious health and developmental consequences for individuals and has far reaching implications for communities.  In the United States 15.8 million children do not have regular access to healthy meals (1). In developing countries one out of six children — roughly 100 million — is underweight, the result of acute or chronic malnutrition (2).

In a world with such vast resources, we think this is unacceptable. To achieve our mission, we have partnered with The Mathile Institute for Human Nutrition to develop the most highly nutritious pre-packaged meals available. These meals are scientifically proven to meet the specific nutritional needs of children and other at-risk populations.

We’re not alone in our desire to end hunger. Like-minded community organizations, businesses and individuals join our mission by purchasing the raw materials needed for these meals. The group then comes together to create the meals at a “packing event”. The meals are then distributed to local food banks and pantries or to community feeding programs in emerging nations.

These powerful events are educational and fun! Participants often feel a sense of purpose, knowing the meals they pack with their own hands will meet a significant need for someone in their neighborhood or in a community around the world.

We believe this unique collaboration between nutritional science and community engagement offers a significant way to provide Life. Changing. Nutrition. to those in need.

Habits happen naturally after they’re formed—they become a ritual, something you can slip into automatically, something you don’t even have to think about. For example, if you have to update an editorial calendar every day, make it an unconscious habit, sparing you the necessity of remembering it in a desperate scramble. Forming habits is the hard part—a good rule of thumb is to force yourself to commit the action every day, with no breaks from the routine, until it comes naturally (some people say it takes 30 days, but the evidence is iffy and subjective).

The singer-actress gave us all the details of her “Fade to Fitness” DVD during the Baja East show at New York Fashion Week

In a crowded room filled with smoke, some of New York’s glitziest editors, grungiest hipsters and image-thirsty paparazzi, there was a queen who emerged amongst us all… and her name was Teyana Taylor.

Seated front-row and chatting with two of our fave Iman’s (her hubby, Iman Shumpert, of course, and supermodel Chanel Iman), Taylor proudly displayed what the world has been talking about for the past two weeks… her AMAZING, tight-and-toned body!

We asked Queen Tey ALL the questions everyone wants answered.

On her amazing body and fitness routine:

“I have a couple of little, secret tips… I have a DVD coming out “Fade to Fitness” and I’m very, very excited! Some girls don’t want to go to the gym because they don’t feel as though they look good… but us ladies should be able to walk out the house and feel beautiful and look good!  Teyana Taylor Stomped Her Way Through the Yeezy Season 4 Fashion Show and Obviously Slayed.
“[The DVD will come out] before Thanksgiving! So you can still have all your Thanksgiving food and enjoy it… Eat all you want to eat and don’t feel bad because you’ll have your “Fade to Fitness” video just in time, knowing that Teyana got ya back! You can watch the DVD and workout at home… in your living room, or in your bedroom. We’re going to make this fun!

“I didn’t see the video until the same day it premiered on the VMA’s! And now, my life has changed. I feel like everybody at some point gets their ‘just due’ and I’m finally getting mine.”

On being a celebrity!

“You guys watched me grow up… You know us New Yorkers play no games, but also traveling the world and getting to know different people also builds you as a person. You have the core fans that knew you forever, that’s been following you forever, and you have the new fans where you tell them, ‘welcome.’ It’s almost like if you walk into a store and you don’t know much about that store, but there’s always a welcome. I’m not the type of person who says, ‘oh, y’all better know who I am…’ no, I’ve always been humble. For all the new fans… download the album, “VII” and get to know me!

“ESSENCE is the epitome of having strong, black women on its covers. And, I feel like I’ve earned that… just from my story, from growing up [in the spotlight] being this tomboy turning into a young lady, being a mom and a wife. Going through heartbreak and embarrassment… to overcome all of that and still keep moving… I’ve earned that.”

Well… we hear you Tey… And it sounds like we better get to it then!

And don’t get me wrong, my squad-in-my-head girl looks incredible. But farrrrrrr more incredible is her workout regimen. She kills the game, leaves the treadmill smoking, and will leave you sore just from watching her hustle. And, because I’ve been a fan of hers for so long that I remember her old ustream account where she livestreamed her workout tips, you’ve got a little treat below!

When you look at Teyana, know that she’s always been relatively thin, but she grinds until there’s nothing left when it comes to staying that way. She’s more than “post-baby body goals,” she’s HUSTLE goals through and through. I might be inspired by her sneaker collection, sure—I mean, can I get the plug, too?— but I’m inspired by the way she treats her workouts: like business.

Might even cut on her track “Maybe” for inspiration next time I head out for my own.

What’s On Your Plate…..

So we are half way through the year, and are you still thinking about that New Year’s Resolution. You know where you said  that you need to have a better healthy relationship  with your food.

Our eating habits need help. Fast food, high-calorie desserts, sweet drinks, and more have filled us up — and out. Most adults and 1 in 3 children in the U.S. are overweight or obese.

Changing the way you eat can be easy. To start, learn about some of the worst food offenders and how to replace them with healthier choices. Then try some portion-control tricks.

Calorie-Bomb Food Favorites

Most of our calories come from foods high in fat and sugar. Sweets like cookies and cakes, along with yeast breads, top the list. We also load up on calories in chicken dishes (often breaded and fried), sodas, and energy and sports drinks. Pizza, alcohol, pasta, tortilla dishes, and beef dishes pile on more calories. Unless you count fries and chips, fruits and vegetables don’t even make a dent in our daily calorie count.

Eat Less

Just two problem foods — solid fats and added sugars — count for about 800 of our daily calories. That’s almost half the calories an average woman should have in a day. U.S. dietary guidelines say we should limit solid, trans, and saturated fats. Cut back on fast foods and refined grains, like white bread. While you’re at it, cut down on sodium (salt), too. Most of us get too much, raising our chances of high blood pressure and heart and kidney disease.

Eat More

Add more nutritious foods to your diet.

  • Instead of fatty meats, choose lean protein and seafood. Shoot for at least 8 ounces of fish a week.
  • Instead of solid fats like butter or margarine, use olive, canola, and other oils that are good for your waistline and heart.
  • Instead of baked goods and cereals with all white or refined grains, make at least half of your grains whole grains.
  • Other healthy choices: nonfat or low-fat dairy foods, eggs, beans, and lots of fruits and vegetables.

Serving the Right Size

Start downsizing to healthy portions and your body will, too. Check food labels and restaurant menus for hidden calories. Learn to “eyeball” your food to gauge what’s too much — and what’s just right.

You may have grown up being told to “clean your plate.” The problem is that dinner plates in homes — and restaurants – have gotten bigger. And so has the amount of food we p

Set Out Salad Plates

To shrink your portions:

  • Eat from a smaller dish like a luncheon or salad plate.
  • Learn and serve the right-sized portion.
  • Don’t go back for seconds or keep extra food on the table to tempt you.
  • Store leftovers in single-serving containers for quick meals.

Put on them. If you clean your plate now, you’re probably overeating.

Motivational Monday 2/20

It happens to all of us at one time or another. Maybe you’re stuck in a slump, or maybe something terrible has happened and you’ve fallen into a hole you can’t seem to get out of. Them’s the breaks, and adversity is part of life. The trick is not to let these setbacks slow you do

Tomorrow is a new day

Now that you know that failure is nothing more than a temporary setback, here’s another great way to quickly get back on track. Always keep in mind that tomorrow is a new day. If we have a rough day and fail at something, it isn’t easy to keep our game face on and keep working through the day at full capacity. This is normal.

However, what separates the truly successful from everyone else is that they take their medicine, absorb the pain for that one day, and then come back re-energized and ready for full-out war the next day. They do not let the previous day’s defeat hold them back from achieving their goals. They do not complain or sulk, because that would only waste more time — time they could be using to make money.

Don’t dwell on the past

Successful people are able to rise above the fray because they focus on the task at hand and on how they can improve themselves. They learn from their past mistakes; they do not dwell on them. What’s done is done and cannot be changed. Successful people know this and don’t waste time or energy beating a dead horse.

The past is useful if you use it as a lifeline. That is, use it to learn from, and don’t repeat past mistakes. This alone will make you a better person. Avoid using the past as an anchor; it will weigh you down and hold you back. Don’t keep your entire past in active memory, because it will keep you docked for life, and if you don’t get out to sea, then you won’t catch any fish.

If your mind is busy going over past decisions and actions all the time, it does not have time to work on current problems and future plans. Without planning, no one can be a success.

Clear mind, clean execution

If you miss the game-winning shot one day, you must come to terms with it quickly and move on. If you do this, you’ll have a clear mind and will perform better. If you want to hit a home run, you must go to bat with the same mind-set you had the last time you hit a home run.

If you step up to the plate thinking about how you struck out the last two times at bat, then you’ll likely add another strikeout to your box score for the night. Leave the last at-bat in the past where it belongs; focus on hitting the ball.

Be a duck

Ducks are graceful creatures. When you see ducks swimming in a pond, they look as if they are floating along quietly, not moving a muscle. However, if you look underwater, you’ll discover that they are “paddling” furiously in order to move forward.

The point is that you must also be able to look serene and keep your game face on, even if your mind is racing along at 1,000 mph and your heart rate is only slightly slower. Take failure in stride by dusting yourself off, getting back up after a short breather and starting the battle anew the next day. Every day is a new day — a potentially great new day.
