5 Tricks To Curb Your Spending And Save Money

peonies

Every year, it seems there are things we vow to do more of—exercise, eat healthy, drink more water. Grouped in with those items is always save money. Today, Arin is sharing how she has curbed her spending so far this year and five ways you can do the same!

We’ve all heard it—‘stop going out, stop splurging on clothes, stop buying things you don’t need.’ Easier said than done, right? My husband and I recently purchased our first home, and we’re quickly realizing that home-ownership comes with a hefty price. Obviously, we were aware that it would be costly, but there’s so many hidden expenses that we didn’t even think about. This has resulted in some serious budgeting (ah, the dreaded ‘B’ word!) and retail restraint. We’ve also had to make some major sacrifices to meet our financial goals. These sacrifices include limited nights out, vacations, etc. Obviously, we’ll be able to do these again in time, but, until then, we’re on the road to financial freedom! I wanted to share a few things we’ve been doing that have really helped us along this journey and helped up save money.

  1. Ditch the cable: We were spending close to $100 each month on cable, and this is an area we decided to cut back on. With streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Chromecast, it was a no-brainer for us. Here’s a trick: If your parents/family have a cable account, ask if you can use their login credentials. Download the apps of your favorite networks, and you can actually watch live television (with a cable log-in) while streaming to your TV! I still get my Food Network on a Saturday morning, and it’s 100-percent free thanks to some generous parents (p.s. it does absolutely nothing to their account).
  2. Small weekly saving transfers: Each week, I have my bank set to automatically deposit $30 into my savings account. By the end of each month, I have $120. This just helps curb my spending, and ensures that I’m setting aside money. It’s a great way to build an emergency fund, too.
  3. Use cash: This brings me back to those ‘allowance’ days! Take out a set amount of cash for the month, and once it’s gone, your spending is done. If you’re anything like me, swiping a credit card adds up. All of those little purchases make a dent on your checking. Utilizing this cash method ensures that we will not spend more than the allotted amount. This has seriously worked! Because the cash tends to go quickly, make sure you’re tracking that spending!
  4. No drinks: Here’s a tough one for some. If you are going out to dinner, skip the drinks. By ordering two drinks alone, we’d spend an extra $22 on the bill. By cutting out alcohol while dining out, we saved close to 40 percent on our bill. This honestly makes a huge difference when you’re saving money. Our average dinner bill is usually around $30 or less!
  5. Check your bank statements: I’m guilty of not checking my bank statements regularly. I recently went through it, and noticed that my bank was tacking on unnecessary fees. I also noticed several other errors (Uber charging me twice, etc) and it saved an average of $25 each month. My bank was nice enough to reverse the charges, so it definitely doesn’t hurt to ask. Make sure you’re keeping an eye on statements each month to ensure everything looks correct. It just takes a few minutes, and it really is worth it. In fact, it paid for our dinner!

Beyoncé is royalty in almost any category you can name, and it is evidenced by how she’s viewed, talked about and how effortlessly she bounces back from scandal (think “elevatorgate,” break-up rumors and 2016 Super Bowl backlash).…

Appreciate What You Have

Every day you have to make choices that ensure the thing you have continue to thrive. So if you find a way of life that is good for you, do whatever I take to keep it. Complacency…the middle ground..is the attractive, safe choice. But fall into complacency, and that thing you love might wander off and be gone before you notice. Then what? Better to protect it in the first place. A relationship does not protect itself; it requires discipline and attention ~ Chris Guillebeau

It’s there right in front of you waiting for you to see it. If you waste all your time staring around at the blessings of those all around you, or taking for granted the wonderful, special, amazing, things in your own life you’ll spend all your time being miserable…What are you taking for granted?

How to Flex Maximum Willpower to Achieve Your Goals

There’s so much talk about goal-setting these days that it can be a little overwhelming. The truth is, though, that a lot of people start to fizzle out with their New Year’s resolutions just a couple of weeks into the year (and hey, if that’s you- no judgment.)

Exert Maximum Willpower to Crush Your Goals

One of the biggest reasons people fall short is simply a lack of willpower. Thankfully there are a couple of hacks you can use in order to increase your willpower and give you the best possible chance of achieving your 2017 goals even if you fell off track recently.

Here’s what you can do to achieve your goals with maximum willpower.

Get an Accountability Partner

Accountability partners can be free (a buddy working towards a similar goal or even an unrelated one) and you check in with each other as often as you need to. I recommend checking in at least once a week, although more serious individuals might do daily. You can find a friend or a partner in a Facebook group if you don’t know someone in your immediate circle.

There are also plenty of paid accountability partners who can help you achieve maximum willpower, too. A personal trainer or a business coach is a great example, and both can push you to new heights you didn’t know you were previously capable of.

Track Yourself Daily

This works really well if you have a daily goal like writing, reading, meditating, or exercise. Get a printed calendar and draw an X over each day that you accomplish your goal. Building a streak makes it easier to keep up with the momentum, even if you’re having a day where you really don’t feel like doing your task. Who wants to break the chain?

You can trick your brain into doing the task simply by making it seem like there’s a lot to lose if you miss it. Build up your good habits this day and make it be a visual with the fun associated with drawing an X.

Give Yourself Rewards

Here is where willpower gets tricky- if you’re dieting, for example, it’s hard to reward yourself sometimes without going off the deep end with the rewards. Choose something small to start with, then milestones as you go. Time off, nature hikes, lunches with friends, and other rewards are usually guilt-free and help you celebrate a minor or a major accomplishment.

Visualize the Moment

Sit back each day and really allow yourself to feel what it would be like to have your ultimate moment with this goal. Is it the first time you hit the beach for the summer with your newly muscled body? Would it be going on a book tour with your new hit fiction novel? Is it standing on the stage with your degree in hand? Pick a moment that you’re working towards, and visualize all aspects of that moment. What will it sound like? Feel like? What outfit will you be wearing? What words will be said?

This is a great method for helping you get back on track, too. It’s okay to go slightly off the wagon, but use these tricks again to get back on track. Soon enough, you’ll find that you can easily maximize willpower by setting yourself up for success.

Hello All,

Winter is not really one of my favorite season…but I digress. So since I’m forced to live the Fall/Winter months I have challenged myself to make it thru and the seasons have officially switched, I’ve been trying to think of goals I would like to accomplish during the next few months. I made one for the summer season and I felt pretty good about all of them, so I want to be sure I’m trying some new things while I’m wrapped up in sweater weather.

My List…

~ Bundle up with my favorite throw blanket and read “Fifty Shades of Grey” AGAIN! ~ “Fifty Shades Darker” premieres in theaters Feb 14th.

~ Try to bake something new at least a couple times a month

~ Find the perfect collection of books / booties for all weather

~ Start a wine collection and pair it with meals

~ Play more board games

~ Crock Pot Time

What are you looking forward to accomplishing this Winter season?

Also, don’t forget we always give you your Motivational Mondays, Wellness Wednesday Fly/Fresh Fridays and “Things We Are Lovely Lately”….so stay tuned and be inspired…many blessings!

The PR Girl Tool Box…Landing Your Dream Job

We spend so much of our lives working, it’s really important to enjoy your job. From a young age we’re told to think about what career path we want to follow, and what our end goal is, but as we get older, it gets a little more confusing.

Working out how to get your dream job, or even what your dream job is, can be difficult. So here are our secrets to finding, and getting that dream job, as told by the Career Girl Daily experts!

Step 1: What are your goals?

What are the factors that make up your dream job? Is it location, salary, industry, flexibility, colleagues? It’s most likely to be a combination of these, but it’s important to decide what’s most important to you, what makes a job your dream career?

Step 2: How can you make it happen?

Your dream job might be to run a fashion empire or become a surgeon, but if you’re still a medical student, or working in retail, it might not be instantly realistic. These are fantastic goals, but you need to consider not only your end-game dream

These are fantastic goals, but you need to consider not only your end-game dream job but your now dream job. What will make you happiest now, and what will lead you to your end-game dream job? Be realistic about what you need to do to get to your dream job, and how long it will take to get there.

Step 3: Do your research!

Once you’ve found your dream job and it comes to applying, make sure you do your research! It might sound obvious, but knowing the name of the hiring manager, and writing why you’d like to work for that particular company can make all the difference in the world.

Step 4: How will your application be different?

An employer often receives hundreds of applications for a role, and it can be easy to skip past any that instantly look unprofessional or too long. Making yourself stand out is an excellent way to get your application read, even if you don’t end up getting the job.

Always write a personalized cover letter, which shouldn’t be more than half a page long, and if possible hand-deliver your application. You never know, you might even be able to meet the hiring manager when you deliver it, which means you’ve already made a good impression, and will be much more memorable than a good email.

Step 5: Do some networking!

Is there one company that you’ve always dreamt of working for? Why not write to them, expressing your interest in their company, and even if nothing is available at the time, a role may come up in the future, and you’ll already have a head start!

Linkedin in a wonderful resource, as are industry groups, and even Facebook pages, for meeting people in the industry you want to work in. Making connections at the companies you’d like to work for is invaluable as they can become a character witness when a job arises.

Step 6: Keep an open mind!

Even if you’ve found that one job that you’ve always wanted, there’s no point sitting around waiting for a response. Use your time applying for other roles, so that if you don’t get your dream job this time, you’ll be in a better position next time around.

Step 7: If you’re not successful, figure out why!

A beautifully written cover letter and CV might get you so far, but when it comes to it, skills are what really matters to employers. Make sure you’re applying to roles you’re qualified for, and if you aren’t getting anywhere, you can’t go wrong by asking for feedback. You might not always get it, but some people are happy to help you eventually get your dream job.
