Energy Flow YogaThe Children are the Future!#KidsYoga

Do You Yoga?

Weight loss, a strong and flexible body, glowing beautiful skin, peaceful mind, good health – whatever you may be looking for, yoga has it on offer. However, very often, yoga is only partially understood as being limited to asanas (yoga poses). As such, its benefits are only perceived to be at the body level and we fail to realize the immense benefits yoga offers in uniting the body, mind and breath. When you are in harmony, the journey through life is calmer, happier and more fulfilling.

With all this and much more to offer, the benefits of yoga are felt in a profound yet subtle manner. Here, we look at the top 10 benefits of regular yoga practice.

1. All-round fitness. You are truly healthy when you are not just physically fit but also mentally and emotionally balanced. As Sri Sri Ravi Shankar puts it, “Health is not a mere absence of disease. It is a dynamic expression of life – in terms of how joyful, loving and enthusiastic you are.” This is where yoga helps: postures, pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation are a holistic fitness package.

2. Weight loss. What many want! Yoga benefits here too. Sun Salutations and Kapal Bhati pranayama are some ways to help lose weight with yoga. Moreover, with regular practice of yoga, we tend to become more sensitive to the kind of food our body asks for and when. This can also help keep a check on weight.

3. Stress relief. A few minutes of yoga during the day can be a great way to get rid of stress that accumulates daily – in both the body and mind. Yoga postures, pranayama and meditation are effective techniques to release stress. You can also experience how yoga helps de-tox the body and de-stress the mind at the Art of Living Yoga Level 2 Course.

4. Inner peace. We all love to visit peaceful, serene spots, rich in natural beauty. Little do we realize that peace can be found right within us and we can take a mini-vacation to experience this any time of the day! Benefit from a small holiday every day with yoga and meditation. Yoga is also one of the best ways to calm a disturbed mind.

5. Improved immunity. Our system is a seamless blend of the body, mind and spirit. An irregularity in the body affects the mind and similarly unpleasantness or restlessness in the mind can manifest as an ailment in the body. Yoga poses massage organs and stregthen muscles; breathing techniques and meditation release stress and improve immunity.

6. Living with greater awareness. The mind is constantly involved in activity – swinging from the past to the future – but never staying in the present. By simply being aware of this tendency of the mind, we can actually save ourselves from getting stressed or worked up and relax the mind. Yoga and pranayama help create that awareness and bring the mind back to the present moment, where it can stay happy and focused.

7. Better relationships. Yoga can even help improve your relationship with your spouse, parents, friends or loved ones! A mind that is relaxed, happy and contented is better able to deal with sensitive relationship matters. Yoga and meditation work on keeping the mind happy and peaceful; benefit from the strengthened special bond you share with people close to you.

8. Increased energy. Do you feel completely drained out by the end of the day? Shuttling between multiple tasks through the day can sometimes be quite exhausting. A few minutes of yoga everyday provides the secret to feeling fresh and energetic even after a long day. A 10-minute online guided meditation benefits you immensely, leaving you refreshed and recharged in the middle of a hectic day.

9. Better flexibility & posture. You only need to include yoga in your daily routine to benefit from a body that is strong, supple and flexible. Regular yoga practice stretches and tones the body muscles and also makes them strong. It also helps improve your body posture when you stand, sit, sleep or walk. This would, in turn, help relieve you of body pain due to incorrect posture.

10. Better intuition. Yoga and meditation have the power to improve your intuitive ability so that you effortlessly realize what needs to be done, when and how, to yield positive results. It works. You only need to experience it yourself.

Remember, yoga is a continuous process. So keep practicing! The deeper you move into your yoga practice, the more profound are its benefits.

Community Corner….Water For Flint

photo

The current water crisis in Flint, Michigan is more than tragic, it’s  criminal.  The citizens of Flint have not only been subjected to toxic water for bathing, drinking and washing, but have also been charged exorbitant fees for sludge not fit for consumption. The city even went so far to mis-educate the residents about how the water was “safe” so long as they didn’t drink it.

Ever since April 2014 when the city made the switch to draw drinking water from the Flint River, anyone who drank the tap water was exposed to lead. Flint, MI has a population that is 60% African American. Again, the citizen composition is called into question when the safety and well being of the citizens are disregarded so blatantly much like it was in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The conditions in Flint have become so bad that President Barack Obama has declared a state of emergency.

The Black Student Union of IUPUI would like to help those who need access to clean water. Since Gov. Rick Snyder has made an attempt at genocide via lead poisoning, we will counteract his indifference with love. We will be collecting cases of bottled water, individual bottled waters, jugs of water or any container of unopened fresh water to send to Flint, MI.We will be collecting water from Monday, January 25- Friday, January 29 in Joseph T. Taylor Hall in Suite 100 in our advisors office.

Those waters will be delivered to the Walker Theater as a designated drop off point to then be delivered directly to Flint. We urge anyone and everyone on campus to participate. Access to safe and healthy drinking water is not a privilege, it should be a right. We can all do our part to help!

An Editor’s Tips For Boosting Productivity

Rifle Paper Co iPhone case

Are you struggling to find a productive groove this autumn season? You’re not alone! Below, our Features Editor Carrie Waller shares her perspective on battling perfectionism and finding ways to be productive amid the chaos in her fall-time freelancer lifestyle.

Many of you have probably heard the widespread rumor that 21 days is the magic number for forming a habit, and I can officially tell you that the statistic is spot-on. It has been exactly 37 days since I last updated you on my quest to add productivity to my daily routine, and I can honestly say that I’m well on my way to feeling more organized and more on top of my game than ever before.

While I wouldn’t say that I have my work-hours hustle down pat, I have learned a lot since enforcing my newly adopted habits. Dare I say it, but the shift into a more organized and productive freelancer (and human being, for that matter!) has actually started to feel natural. Both my work and my personal lives have benefited from the changes I’ve made to my routine, and in case you’re looking to add a productive pep to your own step, you’ll find my top three tried-and-true tips below!

3 Tips For Boosting Productivity

1. Set An Alarm

In my introduction to this personal challenge of mine back in October, I mentioned that I was going to start setting an alarm so that I had more time in the morning to hit the ground running. This change in routine has been absolutely imperative for my mid-season success. I now get up at 6 a.m. and, although I still lay in bed for a solid 20 to 30 minutes browsing social media on my phone and reading through the emails that came in overnight, I no longer feel guilty about it. If I’m up and in the shower by 6:30 a.m., then I can be at my computer working—homemade, balanced breakfast by my side—at 7 a.m. Cracking into my to-do list earlier has single-handedly transformed my productivity. I couldn’t recommend this trick more!

2. Enforce Office Hours

One new idea that was spawned from my early rise in the morning is a steady shut-down in the evening. Admittedly, this change in my routine is more for the sake of my personal life and having more time to spend with my husband around dinner time, but I feel like my professional productivity has gained quite a bit from the change, too. To put the new rule into play, I added a quick message to my automatic email signature line, which details my office hours so that correspondents know when to expect my reply. Having official office hours keeps me moving steadily through my to-do list because I know that I only have so much time to get it all done.

3. Sign Up For Trello

Another promise that I’ve made good on since my last post is signing up for a project organization service. In the end, I went with Trello because, consequently, our team here at Glitter Guide started using it to coordinate back-end items ahead of our new site launch. After learning the ropes (this post on getting your blog organized with Trello from Elle & Company gives a great breakdown of the features), I opened my own personal account and have been putting it to work organizing my pending projects, published items and other freelance to-do’s. This one is taking a little longer to adopt because I’m so used to that fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants mentality, but I think that it will stick by the new year. I’m also looking to start building a tiny team for myself in the new year, so Trello will come in handy for keeping my small staff in-the-know across the board.

As I mentioned before, I truly feel that it’s easier to tackle a challenge together, so I’d love to hear about the productivity-boosting strategies, apps and programs that have worked for you! Do tell in the comments.

“Things I’m Loving Lately”….

01.18.16 By

If you’re anything like us, you’re hitting the ground at breakneck speed in honor of the new year! Taylor, in particular, is wasting no time getting her ducks in a row in this first month of 2016, and below she’s sharing a few of the things that she can’t wait to grab up to celebrate her own new beginning.

  1. Le Creuset Signature Cast-Iron Dutch Oven with Gold Knob ($300): This white and gold Le Creuset dutch oven would look gorgeous on display in a kitchen!
  2. La Bohème Rose Gold White/Pink Watch ($99): I don’t need “Rose Quartz” to be one of Pantone’s colors of the year to influence me into buying any more pale pink pieces. I’m already full-blown obsessed! If you look back over my past edits, I am sure you will notice this trend. This watch has been on my wish list for quite some time now, and I think this month, it’s time to finally get it.
  3. Arteriors Home Jacoby 2-Light Antique Brass Floor Lamp ($960): I’ve been searching for a cool, glamorous floor lamp for my bedroom for more than a year, and I just came across this one—I’m in love!
  4. Recipes for a Beautiful Life: A Memoir in Storiesby Rebecca Barry ($17.08): I’m really into reading memoirs right now and I’ve heard that this one is lovely. I just picked it up and I can’t wait to dive into it.
  5. Catbird, Ghost Rose Candle ($38): I love this candle and its delightful floral scent. Plus, the cool, high-contrast jar design makes it an easy choice for styling vignettes throughout my house.
  6. J.Crew, Girls’ New Balance for Crewcuts 410 Sneakers in Metallic ($50): J.Crew’s Crewcuts and New Balance make the coolest shoes for girls, and I just had to get this pair for my daughter. I wish they came in my size!
  7. Pink Rainbow Mirror ($95): I love the fun and colorful work of Bride and Wolfe. This pink rainbow wall mirror would be so fun in a kids’ room, don’t you agree?

“What’s In Your Gym Bag” Series…
#FitDiva

We’re taking a peek inside our favorite health and fitness experts’ gym bags to uncover their must-have gear and favorite products.

Name: Bas Rutten, three-time MMA World Champ, UFC Heavyweight Champ, and co-host of “Inside MMA” on AXS TV

My workout: I work out at my gym in Westlake Village, California — called Bas Rutten’s Elite MMA — and in my backyard, on my own, with the Body Action System (which I designed).

I like to do conditioning/striking on the Body Action System. I do only super sets since I am not a fan of “just power training” and this cuts my workout time almost in half. I like conditioning better, but I’ve been rehabbing my right shoulder/biceps/triceps/forearm for the last four years, since I’ve had three neck surgeries done. So that’s where my focus is going.

What’s in my gym bag:

1. Back-up T-shirts for when I sweat a lot.

2. Shorts, my own brand.

3. Trash bag to store sweaty clothing after my workout.

4. Stretch cables, which I use only for my forearms/biceps/shoulders.

5. Nathan water bottle.

6. Qwick-AID — stops bleeding fast when cut.

7. Tape, which I mostly use for mat burns.

8. My own brand of MMA gloves.

9. My own brand of boxing gloves.
