Music Mixx…Essence Festival

The Essence Music Festival, known as “the party with a purpose”, is an annual music festival which started in 1995 as a one-time event to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of ESSENCE, a magazine aimed primarily towards African-American women. It is the largest event celebrating African-American culture and music in the United States.[1] Locally referred to as the Essence Fest, it has been held in New Orleans, Louisiana every year since 1995 except for 2006, where it was held in Houston, Texas due to Hurricane Katrina. It features artists simultaneously performing on a main stage as well as four standing-room only superlounge stages.

Music Mixx…..Philly 4th Of July Jam

VH1, Kevin Hart, The Roots, Jill Scott & More Set To ‘Jam’ This July 4th

The Philly 4th of July Jam takes place during Wawa Welcome America!, a multi-day festival that celebrates America’s birthday in America’s birthplace, Philadelphia.

Philly 4th Of July Jam on VH1

If you’re trying to figure out what to do after that last burger has been grilled and drink has been poured on the Fourth of July, then VH1 has the perfect cookout wind down for you. For the past two years, the City of Brotherly Love has been providing Philadelphians with the perfect way to cap off their Independence Day festivities with the Philly 4th of July Jam. While typically the show is only enjoyed by local audiences, VH1 is ensuring that the free concert can be enjoyed by a much wider audience this year with a live telecast. Hosted by comedian Kevin Hart, this year’s concert will feature performances by Jill Scott, J. Cole, Ne-Yo, John Mayer and Demi Lovato, with The Roots handling house band duties. Questlove and Black Thought will also serve as the Jam’s musical directors.

Billed as the largest free concert in America, the show takes place on the Ben Franklin Parkway and will end with a fireworks display over the iconic Philadelphia Museum of Art. If you’re not in the area, then have no fear; the show will be simulcast live on VH1 and Palladia, in addition to being live streamed on VH1.com on Thursday, July 4 from 8-11 pm EST. Executive producer Shawn Gee expressed his excitement about this year’s event saying, “Now with our new partners VH1, the entire country will be able to experience the annual party we have been throwing for 500,000 of our closest friends on the Ben Franklin Parkway each year.”

June Is Black Music Month…..

It’s a known fact that a celebrity’s career rarely includes only one single job. Any multi-faceted entertainer—be it actor, artist, or both—learns fairly quickly that the key to climbing the success ladder is through constant diversification. Making money in various markets guarantees a well-rounded (and long-lasting) career. With the fickle tastes and short attention spans of most audiences, it’s only necessary to jump into multiple roles, bulking up pockets and fan bases equally. Many artists have made the migration from musicians to actors, film producers, authors and all around entrepreneurs. Such transitory career goals have allowed many artists to garner successes they never achieved during their time solely working as musicians. As part of our continued Black Music Month coverage, BlackEnterprise.com has compiled a list of 11 celebs that started out as artists and have since evolved into well-oiled self-entities. —Kathy Iandoli

Prince
Singer-songwriterPrince Rogers Nelson, known by his mononym Prince, is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and actor. He has produced ten platinum albums and thirty Top 40 singles during his career. Wikipedia
Born: June 7, 1958 (age 55), Minneapolis, MN
Height: 5′ 2″ (1.58 m)
Movies: Purple Rain, Under the Cherry Moon, Sign ‘O’ the Times, Graffiti Bridge, 3 Chains o’ Gold, Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas
Spouse: Manuela Testolini (m. 2001–2006), Mayte Garcia (m. 1996–1999)

Anyone who knows me knows I am a HUGE Prince fan, call it what you want, yeah I gotta Prince fettish…If I was his girlfriend 🙂 My first Prince concert was so electric There was a sense of entitlement in the thick air, a desperation to be as close as possible to Prince, to capture the brightest mental image possible since no cameras were allowed in the venue. It kind of ruined Prince’s attempt to deliver a high-energy rock show — there was no room to dance in the pit or react much more than squeeze one arm up through a narrow space in between people and point to the stage.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson in 1958, Prince became a driving force in the pop scene in the 1980’s. His interest in music began early in life and 1978 he released his debut album For You at just 17 years old. This was quickly followed up in 1979 with his platinum sophomore release Prince. From there his success continued with his next three albums and the release of the major motion picture Purple Rain and accompanying soundtrack. Prince was giving even Michael Jackson a run for airtime on MTV and his controversial lyrics and erotic live show continued to keep him in the spotlight.

prince 2
Prince played all 27 instruments on his debut album as well as writing and producing the entire thing (the song “Soft and Wet” was co-written by Moon) himself. Besides his multi-instrumental talent, he is also has produced artists such as Sheila E., Carmen Electra, The Time, and Vanity 6. Throughout his career he has been controversial and enigmatic, from pushing the boundaries of public decency to changing his name to a symbol; Prince has kept himself in the public eye despite a slump in album sales in the mid 1990’s.

This behavior combined with his flamboyancy is what first comes to mind for the general populace when Prince’s name is mentioned, along with the melody to “Little Red Corvette”. What isn’t always apparent to the mass public is his astonishing instrumental talent. He can play practically any instrument with style and does most of the writing, arranging, and recording of every instrument on his albums. But we aren’t interested in all the instruments he plays now are we? We’re guitarists and as such, we are interested in his guitar playing and his gear. One thing that is overlooked in lieu of his eccentric behavior and odd looking custom guitars is just how well the guy can rock an ax
prince 3prince 4

Prince is a master at the art of being Prince, and he gave us a two-hour orgy of his virtuosity, his face in a constant state of ecstasy: eyes closed and lips slightly open, occasionally wiping his mouth after a particularly satisfying guitar solo. He teased throughout the show, asking coyly, “Can I play my guitar?,” sending a come-hither smile to the crowd in the balcony, and even only playing snippets of his hits. Sometimes he wanted to be Jimi Hendrix, making his electric guitar with painted flames shiver in blues tones; at the piano he recalled a young Stevie Wonder, eyes closed and head tilted back as his falsetto gracefully floated into the mic. And he was also exactly as I remembered him, an Eighties pop star prancing around in puffy shirts and breaking hearts in Purple Rain.
